My girlfriend woke me up in the middle of the night, turned on the light and sat on the edge of the bed.
“I have something to tell you,” we said in unison and laughed.
“Okay, you first,” we both said again. “Jinx,” we said, again in unison, until she said, “Tell me quick before I forget my dream.”
“No,” I said. “You first. I insist.”
“Okay, okay,” my girlfriend said. She was really animated and excited to tell me the dream she had about a street musician, a busker, and this then is what she said.
“This busker was extremely shy, especially in his early days, and so he typically played his guitar with his back to the street or subway. Some thought this odd (when they thought it about it all), especially for a busker, but they mostly shook their heads, if that, and went about their days.
This happened for maybe years when one day his sponsoring corporation—the busker was sponsored by Gatorade or some other sports drink like that—started spreading the rumor that the busker could see another world. That was why he only seemingly played with his back to his audience when the fact was that he had been playing all these years to a whole other mirror universe of people hurrying towards the subway, medicated, hungover, inwardly hating themselves.”
“People like us,” I said, “in other words.”
“Exactly!” she said. “Exactly like us. It was only a PR stunt, but what did we know? We were hungry for stories with magical meanings. After that story came out, we began hearing ourselves in his songs. We began thinking that he was singing about us, and our problems, to our twin selves, trapped on the other side of the wall.”
And then my girlfriend turned to me and said, “But what could this possibly mean?”
“Only, of course,” I said. “That I’m going to break up with you.”
“What?” she said.
“That’s what I wanted to say.”
“I don’t understand.”
“I’m breaking up with you.”
“You’re breaking up with me? You are going to break up with me like right now in the middle of the night after I wake from a dream?”
“Then again,” I said, and raised my hand to my mouth to faux cough. “That’s only one interpretation. I’ve heard that dreams can mean multiple things.”
