111. Strange Phases of the Moon

There is a three-quartered day moon, one might have noticed, hanging out over the Pacific. Whether it is momentarily confused or wanting to play the part of the sun for a change, we’re embarrassed for the shifting awkward bigness of the thing. In response to our pleading with it to be a good moon and go away, it tells us that as all rules are made, so too must they break. But what if the sun wanted to be part of the night, we ask it? And the moon says that in certain parts of the universe, and even at places during the summer season on our own planet, that often happens. We do not disagree, for we are not, after all, as well versed as the moon in these things. In the end, finally, we simply must learn to surrender to and live with what we cannot understand. The moon follows us up Highway 1 all day, shifting near and far as the road twists towards it and more towards it, and then away, and again away.
